Nature and fairy tales, dreaming of Finland

While I’ve always spent my school holidays on the beach (clear legacy of my Sardinian origins), recently I’ve been finding myself always more often craving greenery and wilderness, and this is probably why I’m so thrilled to be heading to Finland on two days from now to explore its fascinating nature with the guidance, support and precious insight of locals with Visit Finland.

Finland, and the rest of the Scandinavian countries, have always intrigued my imagination. When I was a child, growing in the mild temperatures of Sardinia, images of lands perpetually covered in snow led me to think that it was impossible to travel to Scandinavia. As an adult, I’ve long abandoned such idea of inaccessibility, yet I’ve still never been anywhere in the region.

Now that I’m finally going, I feel excited as if this was my first trip (I started packing a week before, while it usually takes me half an hour) and as if I’m going to explore some mysterious land.

Among the activities in the program for me to experience Finland and soak in Finnish culture and nature are:

  • Do yoga in the forest (The only thought of it has been mesmerizing me from minute one, very likely I’ll get addicted very quickly, and since I live in a big city, that might become a problem)
  • Go to an adventure park with activities such as zip wires, swinging bridges and high-rope courses (And if I don’t look too clumsy I can even post some pictures)
  • Take a peat foot bath (Can’t wait!)
  • Have sauna bath, either smoke sauna or traditional Finnish sauna (Don’t expect pictures here!)
  • Visit local farms and experience Finnish village lifestyle

Actually, I’m not totally wrong in picturing a mysterious land. All these activities will take place in Finland’s magical Häme region, where unspoilt nature meets mythology, and among my most daring expectations is certainly an encounter with some elves, fairies or even, if we are very lucky, some gods or goddessed, maybe Vellamo, goddess of the sea represented in the coat of arms of Päijänne Tavastia region, where is the Päijänne lake, and where we are actually going.

Apart from the hope of losing some weight with plenty of hiking, after the full immersion in nature of this Finland trip, I’m sure I will come back to Rome rejuvenated, relaxed and with all the energies only nature can give. But most of all, I’m sure I will come back with images and words that will inspire you for your next holiday.

I will be duly reporting every step of the journey, with impressions, useful tips and lots of photos, most likely after I get back home, but during the trip I will be active and updating on every social media, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, using the hashtags #OutdoorsFinland and #VisitFinland, so whatever question you might have, get in touch and ask away!
